Anne Bachelier returns to Weinstein Gallery, three and a half years after her sell out show here in May of 2002. In this show, twenty–two new paintings as well as significant works on paper reveal a more mature Bachelier, rich in mysticism, theatre and romance.

Anne Bachelier, tremendously successful for nearly twenty-five years in Paris and New York, debuted in San Francisco in December of 2001, with the Weinstein Gallery exhibition, Leonor Fini and her Contemporaries: Surrealism Through the Eyes of Women Artists. This allowed all of us in San Francisco a glimpse at this worthy successor of the styles of artists like leonor Fini and Dorthea Tanning. Collectors and appreciators of the work of Surrealism were dazzled by the five paintings by Anne available at our show. Following that group exhibition came her one artist show here in 2002 solidifying her place as a major contemporary artist.

Bachelier presents an oeuvre almost overwhelming in its use of vibrant color and sweeping draftsmanship. In attempting to make sense of Bachelier's choice of "cast" and "setting," one must take into account that for her these are not fictitious scenarios. As with so many of the last century's great "naive" artists, Bachelier finds wisdom in her visions from childhood and legitimacy as well as spiritual succor in her almost ceremonial world, a world she first visited as a little girl. The movements of her brush, pen or engraving tool echo the gestural interactions of what seem to be theologians, magicians, witches, ominous protector birds and calmly abiding sphinxes. It is only through the most delicate expressions of kindness and compassion that Bachelier's characters avoid appearing gratuitously bizarre or frightening, a highly refined achievement on her part. Without explicit roles to assign them, the viewer is presented with the most satisfying and enduring experience a picture can offer, the inviting realm of his or her own evolving imagination.                                                                       cource: Weinstein Gallery
